Abstract

Turbines and generators are the main components of hydropower plants that are supported by several bearings, one of them is the thrust bearing. Thrust bearing unit 2 experienced a temperature rise that exceeded the alarm limit (77?). This study aims to investigate the temperature rise and provide a solution. The investigation was conducted by visual observation; collating temperature and oil flow rate data; and reviewing the hydropower design. The results showed that the temperature rise was attributed to air (oil vapor) trapped in the lubricant circulation system. Therefore, the lubricant circulation system was modified by adding a pipe to the stayring as an outlet for trapped lubricant vapor. This measure effectively normalized the thrust-bearing temperature and flow rate.
